I have had Starlink for about 6 months now (what a life saver here in northern Maine).
I can't figure out why my starlink router is broadcasting an SSID called "SP Red Test Only". This is not something I set up, nor can I access or remove it. I decided to contact Starlink support about it today (will update on the response).
Does anyone else have this SSID being broadcast by their Starlink router? Anyone know what this is?
Yes I have the same issue with my telstra box
SP RED TEST ONLY is not a wireless network is a testing network that is only for the router only so that means if you try to hack it or connect it you will be redirected to the main wireless network so there for no issue or anything detected if you see someone on that network then you can ban them aka kick them off your network if they come back then update your security to WPA2-Enterprise witch allows you to have an Username and Pasword dont use the same password as your own wireless network SSID you need to set a new pasword dont write it down I mean you can but I am not recommending it just leave it in your phone or setup a password so google can secure it. 2nd thing to help is setting up notifications if you not going to setup notifications then skip this so the reason why to setup notifications is that to detect any devices that has connect on your network now if you or someone wifi has been hacked before then this is the time to setup 2 step verification so your account doesn't get hacked also setup a person to moderate your internet that will help your wifi alot. If you need help contact support. 3rd thing is that if you have not been setting up a security for your wifi router witch makes your wifi way faster and securer now this what I would recommend and the 2nd one because you have secured your WiFi and account all in 1 so yes that's all I have to say. Stay safe everyone :)
Been thinking about it more, I received one of the first production runs of the Gen 2 dish (rectangle). SP Red Test is likely a diagnostic SSID that would be used to enter the Linux (I assume) environment for testing. It was likely never meant to ship with that diagnostic, hence they want it back. They likely don't want the general public being able to easily access their proprietary software.
If anyone else is having this issue, contact Starlink and they will resolve it.
Oh and WP3 is not supported at this time. This is an issue they are apparently working on. (I hope they get it figured out, because WPA2 is incredibly easy to access)
OK, well that was interesting. I got a call from Starlink. I mentioned that if they could not resolve this SSID being broadcast from my router, I would use the tools I have to access it. Long story short, they are sending me a new router. This is a "known issue" but he could not say more.
I do have to say, the response was timely and they resolved it quickly.
Haha I get the inclination that there is more to this story though.
Hey, thank you for your response! Yes everything is up to date and yes I know this is coming from the Starlink router for several reasons 1) I have no neighbors, 2) it has shown up ever since getting Starlink and goes away when the router is off.
Support got back to me with a generic non-answer:
Justin Mowers6/18/22 There is no option to open a new ticket, and I can't seem to interact with support on starlink.com at all. I have two questions: 1) The Wpa3 slider on the app has disappeared, is wpa3 still supported? 2) There is an SSID called SP Red Test Only. It is being broadcast from the Starlink router and it is a security concern, as I can't remove it and I do not know how secure the password for it is. Can that SSID be removed?
Anthony6/18/22 Hi Justin, Thank you for reaching out! We are aware of some issues with WiFi settings showing as unsecured following a recent update. Our software teams are actively working on this and expect to have this resolved shortly. In the meantime, you can find instructions to re-secure your network via the following link under "How do I change my SSID (network/WiFi name) and WiFi password?": https://support.starlink.com/topic?category=8
I am a network penetration tester by trade, so my next step is to capture the handshake from that SSID with my wifi pineapple, run it through Hashcat and a few other programs and see if I can gain access to it.
I also replied to Anthony to ask for further clarification. I will post back here to any response, and to my attempts to access that SSID.
Hello Justin, glad to here your Starlink has been working well! I assume you know this 2nd SSID is coming from your Starlink router because it goes on and off when you unplug the router? You can have 2 networks on a Starlink router, a 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz, quite possibly this got activated? Very easy to check in the app under settings there is a toggle to turn on and off network splitting. Have you done a reboot on the router and checked for updates? This is the first I've heard of SP Test Only SSID, but I have seen the original Starlink default network SSID stay in some phones to try and get back onto, so check your phone and removed the network if you were ever attached to it?
Just a couple of thoughts, hope this helps!
