Splitting networks?

Hi,

New here and to Starlink.

I absolutely LOVE my Starlink so far. I live very rural, off grid completely. I had Viasat with its super slow/unreliable signal and data caps for 15 years. I wasn't aware there was an option for me.

The blog on speed testing very informative, thank you.

I read in it that blog the networks will switch automatically? So in settings on the app, should I split the networks?

There's a huge learning curve with Starlink... I'm not a hardware expert. Only have had Starlink for a few months. Constant problems with connecting to my new hp printer... their tech expert said I need to split the network connectivity since my hp only needs 2.4 (juice). How on earth do I accomplish this necessity? Something about using a "Switch" instead of a "Splinter"... what ????

By the way I'm in the very rural upper peninsula of Michigan. HughesNet and AT&T home internet have all been a nightmare!

Hello Mary, welcome to the community! I would only recommend splitting the network if your having issues connecting devices or your getting kicked off the network a lot even when your in range. The automated system in the router works really well, there are only a handful of situations that we've had to split the network to correct issues we have run into. Hope this helps!

I too just got my Starlink and was on Viasat. Night and day difference. I ended up splitting my network for my SimpliSafe cameras, ecobee thermostat and Ambient Weather weather station. All hooked up initially but would drop randomly. No issues since.

Can you explain in detail how and what is done to split a network ? I have outdoor nest cameras I'm going to hook up to starlink . I will be using 3 nest mesh system to get coverage as the area is large .

This is mostly all new to me.

Any and all help is appreciated

Hi John,

A split network takes your two router signals (2.4ghz and 5ghz) and separates them. The reason you would do this is to give yourself the option of either signal when selecting your network for something like a nest camera. Most wireless cameras run strictly off of 2.4ghz because it travels further through obstructions (walls, ceilings, etc). The 5ghz is used for shorter range (closer to your router) but it does tend to improve performance when online gaming or video calling is involved. The 2.4ghz network is sufficient in most cases especially when you are running off a more rural system like Starlink and not something like fibre optic internet that runs at very high speeds. To summarize: 5ghz (shorter range higher bursts of download and upload speed) 2.4ghz (longer range, more stable but slower overall download and upload speeds)
