I recently went from Verizon 4G to Starlink. I work from home and use a Fortinet Firewall. Verizon worked fine but it had slow speeds all around. If I use ethernet directly into my computer, I get download of 70-100 mbs and upload of 4-7 mbs. Not great, but it works. If I run the ethernet into my Fortinet firewall, I get the same download but the upload gets choked to .01-.03 mbs. Not acceptable. What is the reason for this? My IT guy says it's a Starlink issue since Verizon worked fine through the firewall. I can't find anyway to get Starlink support, so I've turned to this forum. Thanks

I have the same upload issue with Starlink & Fortinet - If I place a fortinet switch between the Starlink and Fortinet Firewall FG60E then the issue is no longer present. I do not want another piece of unneeded hardware in the mix.
Maybe a Starlink guy should comment about any and all vpn's
Ok, so i read this looking for the same answer. It seems there is finger pointing at IT ability so i signed up. I have the same issues, on starlink wifi i have 50/4. on wifi after firewall i have 50/.02. it appears to be throttled on purpose.
I am a network engineer am i am NSE4 certified. The firewall is correct.
They might have different routes that need to be set if you use a firewall but i havent heard back.
That would be great, thank you. My IT guy is supposed to be setting up something with Fortinet. Any insight would be helpful.
Hey John, so I talked with my friend that is using Starlink and Fortinet together. He is going to jump into this convo and share what he has learned. The good news is that Starlink is working fine on both the download and upload. He mentioned that there was some configuring to be done, but once it was set-up correctly everything has been working fine.
From Starlink
I also ran directly into Fortinet and then directly into my computer, eliminating the phone system and printer (removed from the ports entirely). My results:
Direct to computer
39.24 down, 25.55 Up
To Fortinet then to computer
63.86 Down, .05 Up
Thank you for the response. I will forward to my IT guy. Also thank you for the link to submit a ticket. I actually found it when I clicked on a "thumbs down" icon out of frustration! They requested a "debug" report and I sent it last night. I haven't heard back yet. I am using Gen 2 I believe. I just received it a week ago - it's rectangular. I don't know what else to tell the generation.
I have the cable from the dish into an ethernet adapter (I purchased from Starlink) and then into the Starlink router. I plug an ethernet cable directly into the Fortinet from the adapter. That doesn't work as you know, so I plug directly into my laptop. I can also plug directly into the Dell Dock and then into the laptop through a usb port - that works as well as plugging direct into the computer. When I plug into Fortinet, I plug into the WAN port directly and out of one of the 5 ports into the computer. I also have 2 cables from two of the 5 ports going into two desk top phones and one cable going to a printer.
Hmmm, well anything is possible at this point. I don't think Starlink would throttle based upon the manufacturer, at least purposely. We have a Starlink system that is being used through a Fortinet System that works stellar, at least to my knowledge. However I'm going to check up with the IT guy on site their and make sure things are good, see if he might have run into any issues like yours.
Which Gen Dishy are you? Are you able to send over a diagram of your network? Just a quick sketch is good, just to help us get a better picture of what is going on.
Also you said you haven't been able to get ahold of Starlink? Did you try to submit a ticket? It might take a bit but they will get back to you providing its done correctly.
I'll get back to you once I've talk with the IT tech.
From our IT department:
All of the security services on the FortiGate are disabled. Only traffic destined for our office is routed through a VPN, all other internet traffic is handed directly to the starlink Network. The FortiGate firewall is configured for DHCP on its WAN interface so there are no static routes to be cleared or removed as the Fortinet support article recommends. At this time we are not considered with VPN performance, standard internet performance is our only focus as it is unusable in its current state. Is it possible that the starlink Network may be throttling the device based upon its manufacturer?
Thank you for your response. I do work from home for a company that requires some security. I have passed your comments to the IT guys and hopefully they can provide a response with better info. I did go through the rebooting process with no change in speeds.
Hello John, welcome to the community! This is a tough one to answer directly, I'll need to understand your situation a little better, because your using Fortinet working from home you require highly sensitive data transmission, you pay extra for the privacy and protection Fortinet systems can give, or the company you work for does. That being said you have a Fortinet Account or your company does that you can use for help setting up the Fortinet System, because you switched ISP's my inclination is that it could definitely be in the settings. The Fortinet Systems are set for rigid security, and are completely customizable, they don't work like your usual home router, their set-up is complicated and usually left for trained technicians.
I did find an article from Fortinet

When you said your IT guy, I'm thinking this is the company one? He could also be right. I'm unsure what he did to diagnose the problem, he might have done more then you think. If he was running ping tests, he might have been able to see more clearly where the problem was stemming from.
As far as fixing, I would start with the simple things, as I'm sure you already have. Rebooting all the connected devices. Starlink's modem is inaccessible, other then by the Starlink agents. Thus there isn't much that can be done on there side, that being said it is always worth the try, your speeds do seem a little slow but still respectable. Maybe they can get them boosted up.
If you let me know a little more about your situation, I'll try to follow up quickly. Hope this helps.
