What kind of speeds has everyone been experiencing so far? We have had the 1st Generation Dishy up and running since February of 2021 here in Red Deer, Alberta. So far we have averaged around 80MBPS Download and 10MBPS Upload (with very little down time to boot). We have seen up to 300MBPS Download speeds and nearly 30MBPS Upload speeds in short bursts.

Hi y'all! Everyone on here seems to be in the USA but I thought you might be interested in my experience this side of the pond.
I have just installed a new Starlink rectangular receiver (is that what you are calling a "Dishy 2"?) in rural Norfolk in the United Kingdom (the top end of the Eastern bump at the bottom!) in a temporary position pending fixing to a roof-top location, probably a disused chimney. Until now we've been on a Vodafone 4G Gigacube contract that delivered about 40Mbps as well as wired broadband delivering less than 10Mbps. Starlink costs less overall and is better than both put together. Our Starlink delivered around 200Mbps between receiver and satellites within minutes of being
switched on, bit less on the test screenshot adjacent, and the standard router seems capable of reaching every part of our fairly large (brick) house with at least 25Mbps everywhere (no mesh, no extenders at present). Near the router the speeds to my iPhone 11 are unbelievable, sometimes topping 600Mbps, which presumably reflects the router caching stuff.
So I am pretty happy so far!
I was getting good speeds all the way up to recently until they sent a notice saying they were removing the 1TB data limit cap. Now the speeds have dropped from 250 mbps to less than 100 on average. Quite a trade off IMO. Anybody else see there speed drop recently?
I temporarily hooked up my StarLink Internet Satellite last night (sitting on ground) and ran a speed test compared to Verizon Hotspot... I'm waiting on 150' cable and a mounting pole.
Starlink - Download 113 Mbps, Upload 32.8, Latency 26ms
Verizon - Download 33.6 Mbps, Upload 12.0, Latency 54ms
Hi Galahad,
I am in Alberta and I have I-phone, Samsung and firestick tablets, fire tv 4K stick and Windows pc laptop. Use speed test by ok la and analiti on my firestick. I have noticed that depending on positioning of satellites as per satellitemap.space determines my speed. In the last 10-15 days I have been connecting to more sattelites in the north. I have been getting similar results on all equipment I have. Retired so have lots of time to play.
Very informative Galahad, thank you.
@DanSmith,
What is your setup such as what point of use devices are you using (PC windows, Apple, phones, tablets etc.) and also if you run your devices off Starlink's wifi, or if you have your own router or if you connect to a pc via an ethernet? Are all your devices affected the same?
Basic steps I use to help me have a more complete picture:
My phone (Samsung S7) is always connected via the Starlink router (wifi) and is the device that my Starlink app is on. For me the Starlink app speed tests always look great, but don't necessarily reflect my real performance. My main point of use is my pc with Windows 10 and is connected directly via a Cat6 cable. On my pc I run a couple of different speed tests through my Chrome browser (the results shown above). While still not a perfect test, it does tell me real performance. Also, I go into Task Manager (windows 10), select the performance tab, then click on Ethernet in the left panel while I'm doing a large update or streaming a movie. This accurately shows the data throughput at my nic card (on motherboard) which allows me to compare to the browser based speed tests and what the Starlink app tests are showing to what my ethernet is actually receiving.
While I was waiting for my ethernet adapter (I have version 2 dish), I used a USB wifi adapter plugged into my pc. I had similar issues to what you described. At first I was resetting the Starlink router which helped, but soon learned the issue was with the usb wifi adapter. I had to force a reset on it a couple of times a day. Once my ethernet adapter came, and I was hardwired to Starlink, I no longer had this issue.
You are pretty far north and should have good satellite coverage (at least compared to points south) if you are in North America. Is your view clear according to the Starlink app?
Are you having problems with devices in your home stopping to buffer when you experience the low speed test?
We have found that speed tests (although helpful) are not the end all be all, our recommendation would be to try a few different speed tests (if you have not already). We often use speedtest.net by ookla, fast.net or of course the Starlink app and see the differences between them. Truth be told if you can run some high quality or 4K streams on multiple devices in your home simultaneously that can be often be a better test as there are many factors that can play into varying speeds when running speed tests.
That could very well be part of the problem as well, they are working on getting more satellites in the sky launching rockets every week to two weeks so hopefully they can fill in those gaps for users. Thanks for the update Dan.
At times my speed has dropped to 20 or less mbps. I have reset it several times now by unplugging and replugging in as per starlink and it has helped. Speeds have increased. Watching starlink satellite app I have noticed have few satellites around on some of those low speed situations. I am at about 53.8 degrees latitude
Impressive!
wow!
Woot! Closest I've come to 300mbs. And look at that latency. 😉
Well that is definitely the demographic Starlink said they were going after, what a great story you have! Very inspiring for all those suffering from expensive data capped cellular internet. Providers. Thank you for sharing!
"Can I ask what your previous provider was delivering? "
Lol! I could be a poster person for Starlink. I live right on the U.S./CA border in central Washington state at 4,000' elev (winter is 5 months long). There is no local internet available in any form, as I'm in a very remote area 30 minutes drive from the nearest very small town. Except for two neighbors .5 miles and 1.2 miles away, my next closest neighbors are in Canada. There are no U.S. cell towers around. I pull from Canadian cell towers. I have an AT&T business plan which gives me 100gb of tethering each month which I very carefully managed. (I'm told this plan is no longer offered, fyi). For over two years, I tethered my phone to my pc for internet. I would average 2-3mbs download and less than 1mbs upload, with about 60-70ms latency. I occasionally would see 15mbs download, but that was extremely rare and only briefly. I'm definitely a happy camper now!
So I wanted to update my post since I have now received the ethernet port addon. My pc is now hardwired to Starlink. I am fairly consistently getting 175-200mbs download, 15+ upload and still getting 20-27ms latency. Occasionally, I get 240-280, 20-25 which is great. And that is running speed test on my pc through Google, so it's what I'm actually experiencing at the pc. I do get 1-3 disconnects each day. They usually last less than a minute. The longest one in the three weeks I've had it set up was about five minutes.
I have to say at how pleased I'm with the Starlink 1st Gen system. We've had it for one year now and it has been fantastic! I just ran a speed at 6pm, every one is home and the TV's are streaming...18 devices are on the network and all of them are working fine while I'm running the test. I ran a speed test and this is what I'm getting to my phone in green and the blue is the overall performance to the house. Starlink you Rock!!!
I've had version 2 dish for almost two weeks. By the second day I was getting 120mbs-225mbs dl, 10-18mbs ul and 20-27ms latency. Starting last week my speeds dropped to 60-120mbs dl, 6-12mbs ul, 24-27ms latency. I'm located on the U.S./CA border in central Washington state.
